How useful is doing charity by donating money?

The easiest form of charity is to donate money. We sometimes donate a few pieces of silver to a beggar out of sudden softening of heart. But how effective is charity by donation?

Depends how the money is used. In the example where we give some money to a beggar, it might be used for food or alcohol. In one case it is helpful, in the other detrimental. The donor has no way to ensure the effectiveness. However, if money is donated to charity organizations that channelize it towards education, food or general upliftment, it is pretty effective. Having said that, considering red tapism and corruption even in charity organizations, there is no actual way to measure the effectiveness of charity by donating money.
