Pecentage concepts in a nutshell
Our tutorial on percentage is comprehensive. Going through the tutorial, if needed more than once, and solving exercise and question sets should give confidence on percentage problems.
Very briefly, in your percentage marks of say 58%, the unsaid quantity is total marks of 100. Effectively, you scored 58 out of every 100. If the total marks were 200, you have scored $2\times{58}=116$, because the denominator of your marks changed from 100 to 200.
$58\text{%}=\displaystyle\frac{58}{100}=\frac{116}{200}=\frac{29}{50}$ and so on.
Percentage is a ratio with denominator as 100 always. This 100 represents the percentage reference quantity.
The percentage reference quantity here is, total marks. Total marks is not mentioned and its value unknown.
As percentage is a ratio, you can express it as a fraction, and also use it as a decimal equivalent to the fraction. For example, 58% marks is equivalent to $0.58\times{\text{total marks}}$.
Likewise 50% means $\frac{1}{2}$, 25% means $\frac{1}{4}$ (of percentage reference, in this example 'of total marks').
